Display names only allow alpha-numeric characters.  If you have any non-alpha numeric characters (, . ! -?) inserted there will be an X in its place.  To remove the X go to Settings and then to MyPage there click on the little gray gear next to the display name to open the field.  Remove the X and save your changes.
